The latest game we have been trying out from Esdevium Games is Codinca, a small puzzle game that is perfect for a quick play when you don’t have lots of time to spare.
Codinca is an easy to play puzzle game for 2-4 people that requires players to turn tiles to create four different codes to win and ‘unlock the temple’.
In the box you receive 24 key cards, 20 double sided spirit cards and 16 symbol tiles.
Set up is really quick and easy. The symbol tiles need to be set up as shown on the inside of the box. Players then decide which element they will play as, Earth, Air, Fire or Water. The key cards are then split into their four pattern groups (line of four, block of four, four corners and diagonal four) and each player receives one card from each of these groups placed face down in front of them. Each player is also given three spirit cards to start the game.
On each players’ turn they can complete two basic actions which can be a switch (swapping one of their own symbol tiles with any adjacent tile) or a flip (flipping over the tile from the white side to the gold side or vice versa). As well as these two basic moves a player can also decide to use one of their spirit cards, however, once all three spirit cards have been used the player cannot use anymore.
Play continues until each player has successfully created each of the patterns on their four key cards. The first player to do so wins the game.
The game is aimed at children aged 8+ and I would agree with this. Little Mr A and I sat down to play this together and he quickly understood the rules – in fact it was a very close game the first time we played!
Once playing, the rules are really easy to pick up and the game does become quite competitive as other players turn over or move your tiles making it more difficult for you to create your patterns.
I really like that this game is so quick to set up and play. It is a perfect 15 minute game to play before bed. As all of the pieces come stored in a nice small box it is also the perfect game to take away with you.
The pieces are excellent quality and I am sure it will stand up to a lot of play. The symbol tiles in particular are really sturdy and nice to handle.
Overall a really fun puzzle game that the whole family can enjoy.
